Welcome
to the official website of Terence Koo: Jazz Pianist. Based in Newcastle
(Australia), Terence'susic has been described as smooth & elegant,
pas sionate, but subtle. Terence performs regularly as a soloist, with
a band, as musical director, producer, arranger, accompanist and teacher.
"I love working
with Terence Koo for so many reasons. Apart from the fact that he is a
bloody great pianist, he is a sensitive accompanist, whose knowledge and
feel complement my style of singing and entertaining. He is inventive
and exciting but most of all, he really SWINGS! For jazz, time feel is
of the essence and I feel that
I can go anywhere with Terence Koo at the helm. He is professional and
gives that little bit extra that makes him the superlative entertainer
that he is. For these reasons, I chose Terence as the musical director
on my most recent CD." Su Cruickshank. Terence has over ten years
of experience working professionally
as a pianist. As a soloist, an extensive repertoire, combined with his
expressive musical touch create ambient soundscapes, able to be enjoyed
either as foreground or background music. As part of an ensemble, Terence's
music intensifies, melding enchanting beats with swing, Latin and contemporary
flavours. Terence
has accompanied many artists for events from auditions, to HSC performances
to Doctoral Conservatorium recitals. Ensembles can also be arranged if
necessary. Please note that Terence now specialises solely in jazz and
contemporary music (no classical). Rehearsals and backing tracks are also
available. While
classical teaching methods have many benefits, Terence believes jazz education
provides a more thorough understanding of the musical language. Placing
more emphasis on conceptual theory rather than playing pieces, Terence
believes that the student is far more empowered to interpret, compose
and improvise over
the music of their choice. Terence Koo has graduated with a Master of
Arts (Music) from the University of Newcastle with a thesis titled "88
Keys...No Doors: Beginner to Intermediate Level Jazz Piano Education -
the Australian Perspective". A Bachelor of Music, First Class Honours
the University Medal, an A.MUS.A.
and a number of University scholarships and prizes round out an impressive
list of educational achievements. Although classically trained, Terence
now specialises solely in jazz and contemporary music. He is the resident
pianist at a beachside restaurant in Newcastle "Noah's On The Beach",
a regular guest artist
with numerous bands, a lecturer at the University of Newcastle, a teacher
of jazz piano, and a much sought after jazz and contemporary accompanist.
Terence has been the musical director for numerous bands and projects,
performing around the country for guests including the Prime Minister.
He has been the accompanist
and repetiteur for the University of Newcastle Conservatorium Gospel Quar,
and has worked at the University of Newcastle teaching keyboard/piano
and music technology, and as a multimedia author. Terence has worked with
musicians such as: Tom Baker, Francine Bell, Nigel Butterley, Su Cruickshank,
Andrew Firth,
Diannia Heather, Lisa Kinna, John Morrison, Johnny Nicol, Annabella Redman,
Julie Wilson. and Pippa Wilson. Terence is the arranger and musical director
for the "Gospel Highway Band", a ten piece band working with
Gospel diva Francine Bell. Terence also leads his own group: "The
Terence Koo Trio", playing to
packed houses around Newcastle. Stylistically, Terence's piano style continually
strives for atmospheric colours, combining sensual harmonies with exciting
swing grooves. His musical influences include: Oscar Peterson, Dave Grusin,
Miles Davis, James Morrison, Diana Krall, Michel Camilo, Meatloaf,
Michel Petrucciani, Joe Sample and Sting. Outside music Terence is a an
accomplished photographer, an avid snooker player, a very keen Scrabble
player and a passionate admirer of convertible cars. DRUMMING@THE DUNGEON
Terence recently played a gig at the Adamstown Dungeon on drums! While
not his first instrument, Terence believes that they are the most enjoyable
instrument to play. The gig was a members' night, with other musicians
including Mansell Laidler on Double Bass and one of Terence's former students
- Matt Enks on Piano.
